Transmission line insulator is often affected by natural or industrial emissions of dust during operation, the surface will gradually accumulate filthy. Especially in the fog and haze, atmospheric particulate matter concentration is high, humidity is big, more contaminants deposited on the surface of insulator, when the contaminants get wet, under the influence of applied voltage, the insulator surface leakage current is increased, resulting in an flashover the surface of the insulator. Currently the expert at home and abroad run a lot of research contamination characteristics of insulators hanging on lines. In this study, several test points were select in Xuzhou and Yancheng, each test point suspension of several natural insulator contamination, through the it was found that the contamination degree of the charged and non-charged insulators is different, the electrified surface contamination insulator salt density and lower ash density substantially is greater than on the surface, rather than the charging contamination insulator has opposite result. Various sources of pollution insulator average gray cement ratio of salt near the insulator highest, lowest chemical park insulator, insulator surface area dirt particle size, composition and content are quite different under different circumstances. In addition, the salt density and ash density distribution of the surface of insulators has a certain seasonality, and there is a big relationship with the surrounding major pollution source; insulator contamination reaches a maximum in February; At the same time, the experimental study on the pollution characteristics of insulators in the artificial simulation of fog and haze was carried out., the influences of different kinds of particles, particle size, concentration, time, wind speed and humidity on the contamination degree of insulator surface were investigated., it was shown that the particle types have great influence on the insulator contamination. Under the same conditions, sodium chloride, calcium sulfate and kaolin mixed particulate matter has a bigger contamination degree. Along with the increase of the concentration and the pollution time, the salt concentration of the insulator is increasing, and finally it tends to be saturated. And with the increase of average particle size and wind speed, the insulator salt ash density showed a rising trend, when the average particle size reaches 20?m or the wind speed is 2m/s, the insulator salt ash density reached the maximum value. Then with particle size and wind speed continues to increase, the insulator salt ash density was decreased. The relative humidity effect on the surface of insulator is not obvious. In addition, due to the structural relationship, the accumulation of pollution by the impact of various factors of the double umbrella insulators and glass bell shaped insulators are greater than the ordinary type insulators. By artificial atmospheric contamination insulators and insulator natural contamination test, deposition characteristics of atmospheric particulate matter in Jiangsu Province can be obtained. On the basis of research, considering the different characteristics of particulate matter deposited on the surface of the insulator, we designed a pollution monitoring device to achieve monitoring the real-time insulator situation and its surrounding atmospheric environment, which is helpful to the insulator contamination warning and operation detection.
