Aromatic hydrocarbon resin (C9HR) is a kind of important petroleum resin, polymerized from C9-C10 unsaturated arenes. Due to the complex composition of the C9-C10 fraction, the quality of C9HR resin is not stable. At the same time, due to the small polarity of C9HR resin, the application C9HR resin was limited in the high-end products. In this paper, we will optimize the synthesis of C9HR resin and prepare the phenol-modified C9HR resins (C9HRP) and P-N modified aromatic hydrocarbon resins. The research can improve the aromatic hydrocarbon resins stability and prepare the polar C9HRP, so the kinds of modified C9HR and their applications will be expanded.By optimizing the reaction conditions, the C9HR resin and C9HRP resin with different softening point were prepared. Using dicyclopentadiene as raw material, the phenol-modified dicyclopentadiene resins (DCPDP) with different phenolic content and different softening point were prepared. Using tetrahydroindenyl and phenol as raw materials, the phenol-modified tetrahydroindenyl resins (THINP) with different phenolic content and different softening point were prepared. By introducing phosphorus and hindered amine moiet into the C9HR, DCPDP and THINP, three kinds of P-N modified aromatic hydrocarbon resins (C9HRPP, C9HRPPNO, C9HRPPN), three modified dicyclopentadiene resins (DCPDPP, DCPDPPNO, DCPDPPN) and three modified tetrahydroindenyl resins (THINPP, THINPPNO, THINPPN) were obtained.The effects of different additions of C9HR resins and C9HRP resins on the mechanical properties and flame retardant properties of silicone rubber were investigated. It was found that mechanical properties and the oxygen index of silicone rubber improved effectively by adding petroleum resins. Using DCPDP and THINP as epoxy curing agent, it was found that the curing products with different hardness and softening point could be obtained by changing the amount of the curing agent.The effect of P-N modified resin on the gelation time, gel ratio and oxygen index of E51 were also discussed.
