The ABS, as a kind of engineering plastics, is widely used in the automotive,electrical, machinery and construction industry. Emulsion graft- SAN blended production is a major method for producing ABS resin, and the polybutadiene latex(PBL) unit is the basis for the final ABS quality, as the polybutadienne latex's quality directly affects the quality and performance of all aspects of ABS product. In recent years, with the development of ABS downstream products, the requirements for ABS quality and performance requirements are further raised. To enhance the market competitiveness of the ABS product, the effects of raw materials, additives and control point in polybutadiene latex process was thoroughly studied.In the part of relation of raw material and PBL latex, the hazards and risks which may arise from butadiene polymers was studied on the basis of formation mechanism of polymer, and the control measures for preventing the formation of polymer were proposed. The research found that the TBC, an important polymerization inhibitor in raw butadiene, would decrease the polymerization reaction speed. To solve this problem, the TBC after alkaline treatment should be controlled in 5ppm or less. The relation between ABS production and raw materials, main additives was also investigated, and the optimized formula was obtained. The control points of whole process was also optimized to improve the final products' quality.In addition, a new polymer agglomeration was developed, and the experiment results showed the particle size of polybutadiene latex increased form 300 nm to 600 nm. All these studies offer new ideas and methods to improve the polybutadiene latex quality.The research results were helpful for emulsion graft – bulk SAN blended process of ABS by improving the quality of polybutadiene latex as well as the quality and performance of ABS resin.
