5-axis NC machining of sculptured surfaces is widely used in the aviation, aerospace and auto manufacturing industry. The processing algorithm of general CAD/C AM software does not give full play to the advantages of the five-axis NC machining. The generated cutter location has a poor quality through the strip-maximization machining algorithms, this paper proposes a new strip- maximization algorithms on this issue to improve the cutter location's quality and significantly improve the processing efficiency and quality of the complex surface.Firstly, the basic theory of strip- maximization machining are teased and analyzed. This paper introduces the concept and the related researches of strip- maximization machining and some typical algorithms. By analyzing the effects of the cutter center wave on the middle-point method, article gets a conclusion that the change of adjacent cutter location of side slip angle causes the tool center relative variation perpendicular to the feed direction. In this paper, a method based on the middle-point method is proposed to optimize the position of the cutter according to obtain smooth tool path. The most optimized side slip angles are obtained on the surface's sample points. And then, based on the sampling points as the base structure, build up the side slip angle of triangular mesh model. Arbitrarily curved cutter contact the side slip angle in two directions of the surface, solving by interpolation, are smooth gradient. Finally, a practical example is presented to verify the algorithm proposed in this chapter.This article introduced the examples of strip- maximization NC machining software application. Drum shaped grinding wheel is designed according to the principle of the barrel tool, and then, applied to the spiral grinding simulation test of a certain type of blade. The feasibility and precision of this algorithm had been proved by machining simulation. The blade samples were milled by using the strip- maximization NC machining software. The relevant processing was made. Shown by the simulation and the examples, the processing line is wide which is gratifying and the experiments have achieved good machining effect. The results show strip- maximization machining method can be used in aerospace engine's machining, is a kind of effective tool wear monitoring algorithm.
