The Research Of The Costumes Of Xinhua Weishan Tomb Mural In Yuelu Academy

The tomb mural of Weishan in Xinhua, is one of the few tomb murals that have been discovered in Hunan province. The mural show the funeral scene at that time, by which we could see people armed with axes, warriors, 12 Chinese animal signs, filial sons and daughters and so on. The variety of the costume, to some degree, reflects the funeral etiquettes and the social customs at that time, providing vivid and reliable image data for studying the regional military affairs, religions, burial customs, music, painting and costumes of Hunan areas. Though the mural is so precious and of great value, a few people have made research on them. Therefore, the author made a study on the Weishan murals from the perspective of costumes, in the hope of sharing new opinions for researches on Weishan murals, as well as the studies on Chinese ancient costumes.Based on the ancient literature and image data,(tomb murals, tomb figures, and ancient figure painting) the author studies the Weishan mural by taking the archeological approaches of typology and comparative analysis. The author classifies the costumes according to the figures' different roles in the mural and certifies her findings on the costumes of people armed with axes, warriors, animal signs, filial sons and daughters. In the comparative study, by internal, horizontal and vertical comparison, the author makes a conclusion on the similarities and differences of the varied costumes. Finally, on the basis of the above research on the characteristics of Weishan costumes, the author tries to further analyze the reasons for such features and explore the relationship between the costumes and times.Through this study, the author comes to the conclusion that: the costumes of Weishan mural are of regional and time features. The costumes in Weishan mural is very simple and convenient and belongs to the costumes of Song dynasty.
