Coal-based asphaltene has high carbon content. Different sources of asphaltene and pre-asphaltene are different on the property, composition and structure. But generally, asphaltene molecules have high aromaticity and can be easy polymerized or crosslinked. Therefore, it is suitable for being used as the precursor of high-added value carbon and related materials. This project is aimed at to synthesizing organic polymer resin with coal-based asphaltene, to provide a new way for the usage of coal-based asphaltene. This work mainly includes the research of synthesis of COPNA resin, using chemical method at low temperature. We explored the impact of the kind and amount of crosslinking agents catalyst; reaction temperature and other conditions on the synthesis of COPNA resin. We got the following conclusions. The best process condition for synthesizing COPNA resin was:with 50wt.% concentrated sulfuric acid as catalyst, benzodiazepine methanol as crosslinking agent, we kept reaction temperature at 140 ℃ for 1 h, rising to 160 ℃ until stirring rod being tied as the end of the reaction. The performance of COPNA resin was as follows:it had a good thermal stability, with carbon residue value being 58.37%, β-resin content being 46.22%, softening point being 280 ℃. Besides, B-stage COPNA resin presented linear aggregation, and C-stage COPNA resin presented space aggregation, having higher polymerization degree.
