“Source-sink” system has attracted a wide attention in earth science field today. The researches of the predecessors mainly focused on the marine continental margin basin, and the study on the “source-sink” system of the continental basin started relatively late.Due to the complicated boundary conditions and main controlling factors of continental basins,it is particularly important to use semi-quantitative methods combining the traditional “source-sink” analysis method to analyze the relationship between the elements of the “source-sink"” system.Based on the sedimentary parameters of the “source-sink” system of the first step in China, this paper uses multivariate analysis as the basic method as well as dimensionality reduction to select sensitive parameters from geological analysis and multivariate analysis. The linear relationship between the sensitive parameters set up a semi-quantitative prediction model for the “source-sink” system of the continental basin.Based on the idea of “representing the past”,this paper carried out the verification of the model from both modern and ancient times, and discussed the applicability of the model, which provides the basis for the quantitative prediction of the parameters of “source-sink” system in continental basin. The main results of the paper are as follows:(1)Among the eleven parameters selected from the source units, transport unit and sedimentary unit, the covered geological information is duplicated, and dimensionality reduction is needed. The catchment area, height difference, longest channel and fan area are determined by using multivariate analysis methods. These four parameters can cover most of the geological information of the “source-sink” system.(2)Through the linear relationship of sensitive parameters, the coupling relationship of the four parameters is described by the model which can describe the characteristics of the sensitive parameters at different scales. The conformity of “source-sink” system parameters was verified from both ancient and modern.According to the verification analysis, the XJ main sag and the XJ 36 sag lack efficient sediment supply which result in the large deviation of the source area parameters.(3)The semi-quantitative prediction model can be applied to continental basin developed under background of the plate subduction. The model can predict sensitive parameters of “source to sink” system with high conformity. The paper discusses the characterization of the "source-sink" system from the perspective of a semi-quantitative prediction model, which can broaden new ideas for semi-quantitative research on “source-sink” system, and also provides quantitative predictions for sensitive parameters of “source-sink” system. As a result of the limitation of the research objects themself, the range of the applications of the model is relatively limited. The follow-up research can be combined with the study of the “source-sink” system under a different geological and climatic background to develop a wider range of applications.
