West African Coast Basin Group, one of the most potential areas of international oil and gas exploration and development is rich in oil and gas resources.Mauritania Offshore basin located in the West African coast,is currently one of the important regional areas of CNOOC global investment. It is helpful to find out the formation and evolution of the basic characteristics of petroleum geology of sedimentary basins and identify different zone development horizons effective source rocks. Then the evaluation of source rock potential for guiding the future exploration was done, providing reliable scientific basis for the evaluation of the CNOOC oil and gas in the study area.In addition, the study may further clarify the factors controlling hydrocarbon accumulation and exploration direction, has a forward-looking sense. This paper describes the geological and tectonic evolution of sedimentary basin of the study area. The possible presence of petroleum system and the accumulation mode in the study area was analyzed to evaluate the resources.Mauritania Offshore basin experienced a complex evolutionary history, divided into basement formation stage,pre-rift,rift and post-rift stage.Overall the study area is a region of west-dipping monoclinic, from land towards the sea steeper slope,or towards the deep-sea terrain gradually slowing down. The northern part of the formation is a typical deep-nose structure, while salt structures developed in southern development zone.Terrestrial sediments derived mainly from the source region of Africa. The strata are mainly composed of Mesozoic and Cenozoic, forming delta-Canyon-Submarine fan of depositional system.Source rocks in the study area are mainly located in Cenomanian and Turonian and partly in the Aptian and Albian formations.Four reservoir-cap combinations are identified in the study area. The study area is abundant with resources.Specifically, oil resources reach 77085 × 106 bbl and natural gas reached 6503.38 Tcf,calculated using the volume method.
