Gymnocarpos przewalskii is a relic species of ancient Mediterranean xeric floral elements, and is one of the main constructive tree species constituting the stony desert vegetation, and have important scientific research and ecological protection value. This article set the sample plot to research the distribution and habitat status, the diameter structure, age structure, the relationship between crown, crown area and plant height, the spatial distribution pattern of the population, and the main factors limiting its population development and conservation strategies of G.przewalskii, which is the only state-level key protected plant in Anxi Extremely Arid and Desert Nature Reserve, the results were listed as follows:1.The average density of G.przewalskii in the area was 0.038 plants/m~2 and the average height was 0.41m.The average density and coverage of woody plants per unit area in the southern area were significantly higher than those in the northern area(P<0.05),and the average density of G.przewalskii between the two areas was significantly different(P<0.01).2.The height of G.przewalskii plant showed linear positive correlation to its crown width, and showed quadratic curve between crown area. The number of young,middle-aged,and old plants in the area accounted for 23.0%,66.9%,and 10.1%of total G.przewalskii plants, respectively and the population structure was relatively stable.Population spatial distribution pattern showed clumped distribution.3.The diameter-class structure of G.przewalskii population in the region approximately showed as single-peak type curve.83.65%of G.przewalskii in the southern area grew in the water-swept area,9.43%of G.przewalskii grew in the gullies between the mountains,6.92%of G.przewalskii grew in the in the slow Gobi.52.33%of G.przewalskii in the northern area grew in the gullies between the mountains,43.2%of G.przewalskii grew in the water-swept area,4.65%of G.przewalskii grew in the in the gentle Gobi.4.G.przewalskii's own reproduction and ecological habits limited he natural development of its population, due to overgrazing, ecological water resource shortage, mining and national key project construction and other factors, the habitat of G.przewalskii was destroyed and in urgent need of protection, the following protection strategy should be taken:increasing ecological water use, further enhancing supervisor on herding, prohibiting or being strict with construction project approval through the natural reserve, closing down or carrying recovery the mining projects existed, establishing eco-compensation mechanism based on scientific evaluation, recovering or re-establishing the destroyed eco-environment,setting up specific protection plot for G.przewalskii resource, strengthening publicity and education, performing ex-situ conservation on G.przewalskii possibly destroyed, strengthening cooperation between research institutes to further research the endangered mechanism and protection approaches for G.przewalskii.
