Phitsanulok and Gulf of Thailand Basins are rift basins of the Cenozoic sediment in the Sundaland. Both of them passed through a pre-rift and subsequent syn-rift to post-rift evolution.Structural events and stratigraphic deposition of two basins occur during late Oligocene to recent. In terms of the petroleum geology characteristics in the study basins, the main source rock comprise the lacustrine shales of the Middle Miocene;the principal reservoirs occur in the fluvial channel sands of the Upper Oligocene to Middle Miocene;the alluvial fan and lacustrine shales&clay stones of the Middle to Upper Miocene provide the top seals for the sandstones reservoirs;oil and gas accumulation are structurally trapped in multiple pools on the faulted anticline.Having so much similarities on hydrocarbon pooling elements, these two basins have established distinctive patterns of reservoir-forming resulting from the different geothermal gradient of basin.According to the former study and the last resource evaluation, the research achievements may have a little help for exploration and production activity in the Phitsanulok Basin.
