Land surface lakes play a vital role in industrial and agricultural productions,as well as in developing regional economy and sustaining local ecosystems. The Mongolia Plateau(MP),which is a typical arid and semiarid region and has been experiencing rapid warming over the past several decades,at the same time, human activities of this area are gradually increasing in recent years, the lakes on the MP experienced a rapid shrink process, and ecological environment is facing a severe challenge. Thus,it is of great significance to the scientific protection of lake resources, manage the local ecological environment that monitor the dynamic changes of lakes on the MP,understand its changing trend and analyze the drivers of the changes. In this paper, the MP were classified into two parts to do the research respectively, namely Inner Mongolia and Mongolia.By using the global water dataset produced by Joint Research Center(JRC)of European Commission, the study of investigating the yearly changes of lake(>1 km~2)in Inner Mongolia and Mongolia during 2000–2015was carried out.We analyzed the main factors that influence lake changes by collecting and arranging the meteorological data and human activity data of the two areas from2000–2015 together with the multiple linear regression analysis method. The main research results in this paper are as follows:(1)Lake number and area of both Inner Mongolia and Mongolia all had two change trends during the past 16 years, and the time turning point were all in 2008.(2)Lakes number and area of the two regions decreased from 2000 to 2008,and the shrinkage of lakes in Inner Mongolia(77,900.2 km~2)was severer than that in Mongolia(60,445.5 km~2).Lake number of the two regions and lake area of Inner Mongolia gradually increased during 2008–2015,while there was hardly any increase in lake areas of Mongolia.(3)Lake changes in the Hulunbuir City and Xilin Gol League played a leading role in lake changes in the whole Inner Mongolia. The decrease of lake area of the two regions during 2008–2008 occupied a proportion of 86.8%of the total decrease of lake area of the whole Inner Mongolia. The increase of lake area of the two regions during2008–2015 occupied a proportion of 89.4%of the total increase of lake area of the whole Inner Mongolia.(4)The Hulun Lake and Wulagai Lake played a leading role in lake area change in the Hulunbuir City and Xilin Gol League respectively. The area decrease of Hulun Lake from 2000 to 2008 occupied a proportion of 90.4%of the total area decrease of lakes in the Hulunbuir City, and the area decrease of Wulagai Lake during the same period occupied a proportion of 66.7%of the total area decrease of lakes in the Xilin Gol League.(5)Driver force analysis revealed that grazing intensity had statically significant negative effects on the lake area while precipitation had significant positive effects on the lake number in Inner Mongolia, and grazing intensity had statistically significant negative effects on both lake area and number in Mongolia.
