Earthquake is one of the major natural hazards, and sometimes can cause large casualties and economic losses. Compared with larger earthquakes, the moderate earthquakes release smaller energy, but the frequency of the moderate earthquakes is even higher. The moderate earthquake happened in desely populated areas will cause huge losses. For earthquake hazard mitigation and geoscience research, earthquake source parameters are determined routinely, such as origin time, location and magnitude, and the earthquake catalog is obtained. Among many kinds of earthquake catalogs, the earthquake focal mechanism solution catalog provides basic data for earthquake study. In this paper, we firstly introduce the importance of moderate earthquake source parameter study and some methods widely used in earthquake source parameter inversion. Secondly, we introduce two commonly used earthquake focal mechanism solution catalogs (Global CMT catalog and W-phase catalog) and their source parameters inversion methods. And then, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods in moderate earthquake parameter studies. Also, we introduce another commonly used source parameter inversion method CAP (Cut and Paste) and some CAP-based methods, such as teleseismic body-wave CAP inversion method(CAPtele), CAP joint inversion method that combines both local and teleseismic data(CAPjoint) and so on; Finally, we analyze the feasibility of using these CAPtele methods to construct a moderate earthquake focal mechanism solution catalog.CAPtele method uses teleseismic waveform data in inversion. The development of the seismic network around the world provides data support for the source parameter inversion using CAPtele method. In this paper, we do the inversion for moderate earthquakes from 2005 to 2014 and compare the source parameter result with Global CMT catalog, the reliability and stability of CAPtele method in moderate earthquakes source parameter inversion are proved. We can use the CAPtele method to construct a global moderate earthquake focal mechanism solution catalog.
