The study area is located in the plateau and arid region, the natural environment here is so poor that the traditional hydrogeology survey is too hard to carry out.Residents' living, production and development of national defense are limited by drought and the shortage of water. The demand for man and labor cost of traditional hydrogeological investigation methods is too great,so the project cycle is too long.People cannot do the large-scale work in such a short time.In this situation,we choose remote sensing technology because of the characteristics of macro, multi band and multi reality. With this technology,we can obtain the basic hydrogeological information rapidly and accurately, such as surface water, water controlling faults, springs, overflow zones, and linear structures. The paper chooses the Landsat 8 image data as the information source and uses the remote sensing technology to carry out the groundwater monitoring research in the Shenxianwan area in southern Xinjiang.First of all,by analyzing the data of predecessors, combined with the satellite image data,we conducted the basic geological interpretation of the study area and the initial screening of groundwater reservoirs. And then through the establishment of the spring for the interpretation of the sign,we extract the spring information.Based on the derived spring, the distribution of water control faults in the area is explained.Through the comprehensive analysis, the distribution law of water control faults in the area is further deduced. The water control fault is analyzed by GIS platform, and the distribution of water fault density in the area is obtained.Through the density distribution map and the basic geological data superimposed analysis,we can get three favorable areas of finding water for level 1,and two for level 2.The results are in good agreement with the previous results on the distribution of water resources in the arid area of the northwest border, which provides a favorable basis for further detailed invest.
