Variation patterns of the characters of leaves, flowers and fruits of Berberis replicata,B.sanguinea and B.lijiangensis were investigated by field population sampling, checking type specimens and statistical analysis in Tengchong County,Yunnan Province,Yulong County,Yunnan Province and Baoxing County,Sichuan Province. The research result are shown as below:1.The ratio of length to width of leaves of B.replicata was 5.95±2.31,the density of spinose-serrates on leaf marigins was 0.63±0.77/cm.The number of tepals varied from 13 to 19,mean±SD was 15.10±1.16.Tepal with nectaries emarginated at apex.Ovule numbers per ovary varied from 1?4,mean±SD was 1.91±0.48.Seed numbers per fruit varied from 1?4,mean±SD was 1.78±0.47.Among the cofficients of variations, tepal numbers was the lowest, was 0.06±0.04;while length of tepals was the highest, was 0.37±0.04.2.The ratio of length to width of leaves of B.sanguinea was 6.19±1.85,the density of spinose-serrates on leaf marigins was 2.13±0.62/cm.The number of tepals varied from 13 to 22,mean±SD was 16.91±1.91.Tepal with nectaries emarginated to deeply incised at apex.Ovule numbers per ovary varied from 2?10,mean±SD was 4.24±1.12.Seed numbers per fruit varied from 1?5,mean±SD was 3.29±1.07.Among the cofficients of variations, tepal numbers was the lowest, was 0.07±0.03;while seed numbers was the highest, was 0.33±0.05.Based on the similarity in the color of flowers and ovule numbers between B.sanguinea and B.multiovula,B.multiovula is suggested as a synonym of B.sanguinea.3.The ratio of length to width of leaves of B.lijiangensis was 2.88±0.54,the density of spinose-serrates on leaf marigins was 0.88±O.39/cm.The number of tepals varied from 11 to 15,mean±SD was 12.84±1.22.Tepal with nectaries emarginated at apex.Ovule numbers per ovary varied from 2-4,mean±SD was 3.45±0.54.Seed numbers per fruit varied from 1?4,mean±SD was 2.45±0.96.Among the cofficients of variations, length of fruits was the lowest, was 0.08±0.01;while length of spines was the highest, was 0.41±0.10.4.The pollen morphology of B.replicata,B.sanguinea and B.lijiangensis was observed.Pollens were all spheroidal in shapes and spirotreme.Size of pollens of B.replicata was(36.38?42.27)×(6.08?40.35)?m;Size of pollens of B.sanguinea was(40.01?45.48)×(38.33?43.83)?m;Size of pollens of B.lijiangensis was(31.01?35.70)×(29.90?34.20)?m.5.Leaf epidermal micromorphology of B.replicata,B.sanguinea and B.lijiangensis was examined using light microscopy(LM)and scanning election microscopy(SEM).The results included that:The shapes of leaf epidermal cells were usually irregular or polygona;the stomatal apparatuses are present only on the abaxial surface, the stomatal apparatuses were all paracytic types. The characters of stomatal apparatuse and leaf epidermal cells had obvious differences among the three species,so they could be served as one of the criteria to identify species of Berberis.6.The chromosome numbers of B.replicata,B.sanguinea and B.lijiangensis were reported for the first time. The chromosome numbers were all 2n=28.
