The contact problems involving an elastic thin layer which related to multiple subjects have become special areas in contact mechanics because of their applications to a great variety of engineering structures of practical interest. For the materials possessing mechanical properties, the layer is used as protective cover to impart superior strength and durability to the mechanical component. The contact models of the elastic thin layer are also particularly helpful for the research of some important structures, such as pavements in roads and the human cartilage. In this paper, as the research of elastic thin layer, the stress and deformation of the layer are considered in different contact problems. First, based on the boundary conditions, assuming displacement components of the layer in the form of piecewise function, the stress and strain components of the layer are derived for the normal contact problem without adhesion. The contact pressure and the trend of plastic yielding are discussed. Then, with the Papkovich-Neuber solution and the harmonic potential functions as the starting point, the singular integral equations for the contact pressure are obtained by using the Fourier transform technique, utilizing the Guass-chebyshev integration method and discrete method to discretize the singular integral equations, the contact pressure and radius are derived by the iterative method for the whole problem. Through the above method, solved the sliding contact problem between the cylinder and the elastic thin layer, researched the rolling contact problem for cylinder and elastic thin layer bonded to rigid substrate, analyzed the receding contact problem between an elastic thin layer and the rigid foundation. In the numerical examples, the effects of Poisson s ratio, thickness of layer and friction factor on the contact pressure and deformation of the layer are discussed. This paper will enrich and develop the contact mechanics for elastic thin layer, promotes the combination of contact mechanics with other disciplines, supplies the theoretical basis for design of the coated engineering assembly, and is important to engineering applications.
