China’s theoretical exploration on socialist market economy from 1978-1982 could be reflected on the following three aspects:to review the classical ideologists’ notions; to summarize historical lessons and experiences and to make theoretical innovations based on live practices. To establish a market-oriented reforming goal is a difficult process. The first chapter introduces the historical background of the exploration, which can best be characterized by the dreadful disadvantages caused by the highly-centralized planned economy that many a leader tried to reform but failed, and the widespread discussion on the truth-criterion, which won the popular support of the principle of seeking truth from facts as well as emancipation of the mind. In 1978,the great decision made in the third plenary session of the 11th central committee of the CPP to the transformation oriented by the economic construction makes an urgent need for scientific theories, especially the socialist market theories. The second chapter emphasizes to review the conceptions and practices initiated by the former thinkers on this point, which includes on the one hand the inspection of Marx and Engels’s illustrations on socialist features, commodity economy and economic crisis, ending with the conclusion that all the communist features are built upon the extremely high level of productive power, and crisis in the case of the socialist public ownership will never finds its way;on the other hand embraces the examination of Lenin and Stalin’s theory and practice on the commodity economy. The third chapter displays Beijing’s highlighted research on economic reform and development in Soviet Union, Europe and America. For the purpose to learn and summarize their experiences and lessons, Chinese delegation were sent and seminars were hold regularly. The fourth chapter exhibits inner-party veterans’ thinking on the issue. Deng insisted that only market economy can be the very emancipation of socialist productive power and the two can coexist together. The other typical leader is Chen, who advocated that socialist market economy should be dominated by planned economy and meanwhile be supplemented by market economy. The fifth chapter revels the response of the circle of research to the issue, which incorporates the relations between plan and market, how to utilize market economy to serve for modernization and so forth on. Even though scholars argued intensely on the problem and have not reached agreement on some issue, and yet their spirit of open-mined and being upright, particularly their contribution to the sinicization of Marxism political economy can never be forgotten. The sixth chapter presents the theoretical results of socialist market economy, which intensively embodied on the reforming target identified in the 12th national congress of the CPC, being characterized by the rule of "market-domination, plan-supplementary". Despite there existed limits in the aim, and yet it has positive effects on China’s economic boom. Theoretically, it riches and develops Marxism system of theories, laying firm basis and offering realistic power to research further.
