Agriculture is the fundamental resources for survival and development ofhuman being; it brings prominent influences for the development of the nationaleconomy. Agriculture takes an important part of the national economy; it makesproduces mainly with land resource. However, even it is a primary products, theregional is one of its main features, for agriculture is an industry that strongly limitedby the natural conditions. Lumber industry is a branch of agriculture; it can bringhuge impact to the local economy. Especially in Mu Danjiang, lumber industry hadmade outstanding contributions in the past.Mu Danjiang owns approximately20species of woody plants such as KoreanPine, Birch and fir, and around100species of bush that including plants like hazeland azalea. Mu Danjiang has its own regional strengths of the lumber industry: itlocated on the node of East Asia international trade channel, and has four treaty ports,one comprehensive bonded, eight inside industrial parks and six outside industrialparks. In addition, Mu danjiang has absolute advantage in resource import, there wasyearly eight millions cube meters import Russian timber in this city that takes80%of the total number of the import timbers in the entire Hei Longjiang Province, andone fifth of the national import timber.As an important distribution center of the import timber, Hai Lin, which isunder the supervision of Mudanjiang municipal government, has its special target toconstruct an “international city of lumber industry”. The rich resources of timberalready became a signature of Mudanjiang to attract more investment. Currently,there are voluminous timber manufacturers in Mu Danjiang, which suggested abright future of the lumber industry in this district. However, the increasing numberof the rotten and sick woods had greatly threatened the development of the lumberindustry in this region.This paper contains three main parts: the literature review of previous studiesof domestic and international lumber industry, an outline of current development of the lumber industry in Mu Danjiang district and a summary of features of locallumber industry. We hope we could find out the main features influencing the locallumber industry through a thorough analysis of strengths and weaknesses of MuDanjiang’s lumber industry. The objective of the main features include variousaspects such as: natural condition, the source of raw materials, enterprises profile,primary products, marketing, lumber industrial park, policy, investment oftechnology, human resource, development of industry association and governmentsupport. Based on the study above, we will suggest some targeted strategies thatwould push the development of the lumber industry and promote the development ofthe local economy in Mu Danjiang district.
