At present, global economic recession has brought about many new changes, opportunities and challenges, also made the situation complicated and severe. In such external economic environment, Chinese enterprises must respond with positive change and continuous innovation, to win lasting competitive advantages. Studies about the leadership theory show that, in the environment with economic transformation and uncertainties, presence of the charismatic entrepreneurs and leaders is particularly important, as they tend to gather and integrate relevant forces in organizations to form a strong cohesive force and promote the development of enterprises in the change. A large number of empirical studies have also shown that charismatic leaders are conducive to facilitating employees to generate positive attitudes and behaviors, positively correlated with individual performance of employees, and closely related with the performance of teams and organizations. However, as only a few studies have analyzed the functioning mechanism of the charismatic leadership from multiple levels, it is very difficult to dialyze the effectiveness of the charismatic leadership in a more comprehensive manner.Using Meta-analysis, we conducted a qualitative review on the literatures of the relationship between charismatic leadership and individual, group, and organization performance. A 12933 sample included in 53 valuable papers was selected through literature search, the analysis on which show that:charismatic leadership is positively related to each level of performance; the relationship between charismatic leadership (r=0372) and organization performance is the highest, followed by group performance (r=0.271) and individual performance (r= 0.214); the measurement of charismatic leadership and regional culture moderated the relationship between charismatic leadership and individual performance. The direction of further studying charismatic leadership was discussed as well. |
