Food is the paramount necessity of the people. Because of food companies blindly pursuing the maximization of economic benefit, reducing costs, ignoring the consumers’ life and health, abandoning the social responsibility, Food safety incidents like "Melamine Milk Powder" event in2008, "Poison Capsule" event and "Cooking Oil Pharmaceutical" event in 2012 are increasing in recent years. The loss of moral despicable behavior not only brought serious consequences and painful lesson to the society but also caused a huge shock to the food industry enterprises. Under the pressure of the society, each enterprise is in an awkward situation, they worry about the high cost or no effect when undertaking social responsibility. Enterprises to undertake social responsibility is more disadvantages or more advantages, there is no unified conclusion. Scholars have also fought over this issue, some think that corporate social responsibility is bound to reduce the enterprise performance and competitiveness; On the contrary, others think social responsibility can improve the enterprise performance and competitiveness.Using logistic regression model and multiple linear regression model, this paper studies the relationship of corporate social responsibility 、 enterprise performance and enterprise competitiveness. The sample is 92 food industry companies in the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange which have published annual report and social responsibility report in the year of 2010-2012. Adopting the way of progressive research to analyse the relationship between social responsibility and enterprise performance, we take whether the disclosure of social responsibility and the score of social responsibility report as explained variable and enterprise performance as explanatory variable. Then analysing the relationship of corporate social responsibility and enterprise competitiveness, we take enterprise competitiveness as explained variable, the overall performance of the degree of corporate social responsibility and the each topic of corporate social responsibility as explanatory variables. Therefore, we establish a virtuous cycle among the three, enterprise performance is higher, the better social responsibility, and the stronger the enterprise competitiveness in the food industry. The empirical results also prove it.The contribution of this paper studying the relationship between enterprise performance and competitiveness was passed on corporate social responsibility, attesting the corporate social responsibility is an indispensable part of the development of the enterprise. The research methods make the results more thoroughly. In addition, this study construct social responsibility evaluation system based on the seven themes-of the ISO26000 and social responsibility reports with a new set of social responsibility index evaluation way. Finally, this article states the current social responsibility situation of the food industry with objective data, and we put forward feasible advices to strengthen the social responsibility of food industry from the two macro and micro aspects in combination with empirical analysis.
