With the rapid expansion of the Mobile Internet and the widespread of smartphone, the instant messaging system based on the mobile terminal is also quickly developed, which has become a necessary part of human’s life. However, the present instant messaging software is becoming more functional, construction is being more complicated. And all of that contains too much irrelevant content with the instant messaging. Therefore, it has broad prospects for development to design a kind of simple application only with basic instant messaging functions. This research aims to devise an Android-based lightweight instant messaging system with essential instant messaging functions like message, picture, voice and video, but except social intercourse, entertainment, e-commerce, etc. to conduct instant messaging by using the mobile terminal. At the very beginning, this article introduces the research background of the system and describes the framework of the Android OS, operating principles of the instant messaging protocol in details. Then, it takes general requirement analysis of the system. Besides, it also makes detailed design and concrete realization on that basis. At the end, it deploys and tests the system which has been realized already. The test result shows that this system is capable of carrying out the fundamental functions such as user registration and login, friend list getting, message, profile, voice, picture sending and receiving. The prospective goals in system requirement analysis and design are basically achieved with the system’s global function and performance.
