Haptic texture rendering is a human-computer interaction (HCI) technology which can generate realistic virtual haptic perception. On the basis of human haptic perceptual mechanism, it can transmit the shape and texture information of an object in virtual environment through simulating the processes of physical haptic perception. This paper designed a haptic texture detecting system and proposed an optimized modeling algorithm with the consideration of human haptic perception as well as the results of previous studies, and performed a series of simulation and contrast experiments.The rest of this paper is organized as follows. Firstly, a hardware device is designed based on the previous texture detecting system. Secondly, the force and acceleration signal of the real texture surface detected by scanning the real texture with the device is processed. Then, a haptic texture rendering model similar to human texture perception is proposed. The model can not only reflect the physical features of real texture but also consider the perception characteristics of human beings. Finally, with the help of PHANToM Omni haptic device, a series of experiments is performed to compare this haptic texture system with the others and verify the effectiveness of the modeling algorithm.
