With the rapid development of the computer and neurobiology, cognitive science in the field of application of GUI design has become a new research trend. The main purpose of this study is to understand the users’ cognitive behavior for the presentation of interface elements, reduce the deviation of cognition between the user and visual elements, and improve the efficiency of information processing. In this paper, based on ACT-R cognitive model, we explore how the visual presentation style and interaction style of GUI influence users’ internal mind processing mechanism. In view of the Flat design trends, blocks of color and line of GUI elements show function partition and hierarchy information to the user, and help users understand the information organization and structure. In the GUI with a large amount of information and complex function structure, color and graphic will directly affect the users’ performance during searching and processing information. By means of experiment and modeling, the abstract color and shape as the icons, and combined with the search task specific application scenarios, we explore how the color and graphics of visual elements influence the icons search task.In order to simulating user cognitive model for icons search task, combines the ACT-R theory and the visual presentation of flat design, this paper use eye tracking technology to analysis users’ visual search performance for different color and shape elements, and use the Response Surface Methodology to build a mathematical model. Based on eye movement data and visual focus map, we analysis the users’ search strategy, and puts forward some suggestions for improvement of ACT-R cognitive model.Experimental results show that there is a linear relationship between the size of icons set and users’ response time, and time decreases as the icons line thicker, but this change does not affect the user cognitive model. Found in the eye movement tracking, low-level visual processes has an important influence on user search strategy. In the pre-attentive bottom-up processes, visual system filter the information based on bottom-up activation, and the information of element (color, position, etc.) will be stored in the iconic memory, then the top-down activation take part in the feature matching works (graphics, letters).Introduce the parallel processing mechanism of bottom-up into the ACT-R cognitive model, which can improve the ACT-R model, but also can advance the presentation style and interaction style of interface elements.
