The rotary parts are widely used in machines, automobiles, weapons and other fields. The contour of rotary part has a great influence on their assembly and working functions. Therefore, we need to measure and evaluate whether they meet the designing accuracy. With the development of science and technology, the designing and the machining accuracy of the rotary part are greatly increased. Therefore, the corresponding requirements for the precision of the measuring system is becoming more and more high, so it is very necessary to select the most suitable measuring technique.This paper first analyzes a variety of modern methods of measurement and compares the advantages and disadvantages of the contact and non-contact measurement. Due to the improvement of measurement accuracy and measuring efficiency requirements, optical non-contact measurement technology has become a mainstream method. We designed a fast automatic measuring system to measure the contour of a rotary part based on linear CCD sensor, the measuring system mainly includes mechanical system, motion control system, data acquisition system. During the process of the measurement, the linear CCD sensor will move along the axial direction of the workpiece and collect the radial data. At the same time, the grating ruler will collect the axial data in the way of synchronization. After completing the data acquisition, we can get the contour of rotary part by analysing the data.The original contour data of a rotary part gained by the measuring system is actually a set of discrete points. The original data must be processed before measuring and evaluating, Those points with larger error will be eliminated first, and the left ones can make the contour data curve smoother, then to extract the feature points and piecewise fitting. Then we can get the geometry information of the contour of rotary.The software of measuring system is based on the Windows system and Visual Studio. The software system consist of motion control, data acquisition, graphic display and data processing parts. The measuring system can observe the status of the measuring system on real-time, and realize the human-computer interaction.Finally in order to verify the accuracy of the system we do some related experiments based on the experimental platform. The results prove the reliability of data processing algorithm proposed in this paper, and the accuracy of the system.
