Oceanography observation is the precondition of ocean engineering. Thus, the development of oceanographic observation technique should have high priority for marine resource and energy exploitation. Underwater imaging technology which is one of the most important means of oceanography observation is currently the focus of future research and development in the developed countries in the world.Polarization imaging technology is a method that acquires the object images by collecting the polarization information of the target radiation or reflected signals. It is a frontier technology with great applied value. In underwater imaging, the environment is complex; polarization imaging can be used to filter out the backscattered light. The received signal can be improved by choosing the right polarization direction, thereby improving the quality of the target image. The polarization imaging has become one of the research hotspots at home and abroad.Traditional underwater polarization imaging in the field of imaging distance limitation limits its application in underwater target detection over remote distance. In order to break though the limitation of underwater polarization imaging on the distance and achieve target imaging in more remote distance. It is an effective method to overcome the defects that combine polarization imaging with compressed sensing sampling. By using the advantages of compressed sensing sampling make up for the shortcomings of the underwater polarization imaging and by using the advantages of the underwater polarization imaging make up for the shortcomings of the compressed sensing sampling. Combining with each other achieves more distant, clear image. Sparisity or compressibility of the signal is the premise of compressed sensing. The recovery of signal can be achieved by collecting a small amount of non-relevant samples and reconstruction algorithm. Compressed sensing sampling technique shift the burden of signal processing from the sensor to algorithm, greatly reducing the system requirements of the sensors and therefore have great potential for application in optical imaging.Underwater imaging is investigated by combining compressed sensing sampling and active polarization imaging. Its working principle is analyzed,Prototype of the imaging system is designed. The experimental in the air and in water are both carried out and the experiment results prove the feasibility of the underwater polarization imaging based on compress sensing. Compared with the traditional underwater polarization imaging, its limit imaging distance is longer than the latter. At the same imaging distance, compared with underwater compressed sensing imaging, its image is clear than the latter. In the last section of this paper, several factors affecting the quality of imaging are analyzed, and some measures are investigated and proposed to improve the system imaging performance.
