Recent years, with the development of machine vision and integrated circuit, there are more and more diversified ways of acquiring video. So, the video system which could provide plenty of information has been widely used in different fields. Although it seems that capturing video is convenient, people would like to use this captured video to finish some advanced work by processing the information hided in the video. By doing this, it is convenient for people’s daily life and save the cost of human resource. So, a hardware system which could process a mass of data is necessary to fulfill all those demands. The FPGA with peripheral units exactly meets all these needs in process of video signal. As a programmable logic device, FPGA has the characteristics of high integration, flexible structure and short development cycle. In this paper, most of the verification of application system on FPGA devices is realized. And the main research of this paper can be concluded as follow.This paper firstly analyzes the FPGA applying in the video processing in various fields of application, it can be seen that the FPGA in video signal processing is easily and widely used in these fields, and then research the existing method of the application of head detection and auto precise positioning which are also used in this paper on the FPGA system.Secondly, this paper studies the structure and design flow of FPGA and introduces the development tools and the hardware programming language, Verilog HDL. It also introduces the Atlys development platform and the frequently used modules on it.Thirdly, this paper studies the theory part, video image processing algorithms, which are applied in the hardware system. The video image processing begins with the video image pre-processing algorithm, edge detection and Hough transform algorithm introduced one by one, which is also combined with the hardware processing system of actual conditions and FPGA operation characteristics of the selected the most suitable for the application in hardware processing algorithm.Finally, this paper mainly focuses on two specific FPGA based video signal processing application scenarios:the human head detection scene and real-time positioning system for electric vehicle. In this two scenarios, according to the system demands, the algorithm which is needed in the system was chosen and modeled combined with System Generator. And then it introduces the detailed design of different modules including image capture module, image processing module and image display module. All this theoretical designs are implemented on the Atlys development platform. This paper combined with the practical application proves that the availability of FPGA in application in video image processing.
