Multimedia transmission via the Internet becomes popular along with the development of the Internet and computer technology. After the release of the new generation video coding standard high efficiency video coding (HEVC),3D and scalable video coding standard based on HEVC are also published. In the meanwhile, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) developed the dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) standard to transfer streaming video more efficiently.The traditional DASH systems only use 2D video coding and the usage and research of the scalable video are limited to the previous generation scalable video coding standard SVC. Since the 3D and scalable video coding standard based on HEVC have just been finished, the researches on their applications in DASH are very few. As a result, the study on DASH oriented 3D and scalable video coding in this dissertation is very meaningful. The main research topics and innovations of this dissertation are summarized as follows:Firstly, this dissertation proposes a depth image flexible resolution coding framework. At the same time, this dissertation also considers the size and the location of depth image cropping window, as well as the sampling grid offset between the depth and texture image. To make sure the synthesis views have a good quality when we use the flexible depth images as input, the depth image encoding process uses an improved rate-distortion optimization algorithm which takes the synthesis distortion into account.Secondly, this dissertation proposes two algorithms to improve the downstream rate-distortion performance of SHVC in DASH. After the analysis of the reasons that cause the raise in downstream bitrate, this dissertation proposed the sub-layer selective inter-layer prediction algorithm and the open GOP structure in enhancement layer algorithm utilizing the hierarchical prediction structure and layer-wise startup mechanism of SHVC. Compared with other methods, these two method can improve the downstream rate-distortion performance of SHVC significantly and conforming to the standard in the meanwhile.Finally, this dissertation proposes a DASH performance norm oriented DASH system. Unlike the traditional DASH systems that based on 2D video coding, the DASH systems that use 3D and scalable video coding have more complicated prediction structure. This dissertation proposes DASH compression norm, reception norm and switch norm for 3D and scalable video coding. The encoders, DASH servers, proxies, caches and clients can encode, cache, receive and switch based on such norms. The simulation results show that the proposed DASH system framework has a better performance in encoding, reception and switching.
