Nowadays, perimeter intrusion detection system is becoming one of the most important appli-cations of wireless senor networks (WSNs) and has been widely employed to prevent unauthorized intrusion in many scenarios, such as territory borders, airports, coastlines etc. Since wireless sen-sor nodes are small and have limited sensing, computing and communication resource, they may obtain inaccurate results because of environmental noise and node failure. Therefore, it is a chal-lenging and important job to design and implement a fault-tolerant perimeter intrusion detection system, which can be resistant to environmental noise and node failure.This thesis firstly proposes a directional probabilistic detection model, a sensor fault model and a network deployment model of perimeter intrusion detection system. Based on these models, we describe the fault-tolerant perimeter intrusion detection algorithm which contains sensor-level detection algorithm, sink-level detection algorithm and trust management algorithm. Then, we design the hardware of detection nodes and sink nodes which contain a control module, a net-working module, a remote control module, an interface module, a GPRS module, a power module, waterproof housing and connectors, and we accomplish the embedded coding of both kinds of nodes. Detection nodes and sink nodes can perform sensor-level detection algorithm, set up an ad-hoc networking, and send information to control center. The control center of the system can perform sink-level detection algorithm and trust management algorithm, and also can storage and display detection data. At last, we conduct experiments to verify the performance of the system, and investigate the impact of deployment parameters on the system performance.This thesis establishes the model of perimeter intrusion detection system, presents and proves the fault-tolerant perimeter intrusion detection algorithm. Based on the algorithm, the hardware and software are designed to implement the fault-tolerant perimeter intrusion detection system, which can be resistant to environmental noise and node failure. Experiments and simulation results show that the system has a efficacious intrusion detection preformance.
