High Impedance Surface(HIS) is a metal-dielectric type Electromagnetic Band Gap(EBG). The HIS with unique reflection phase feature and surface wave band-gap, brought a lot of new possibilities in microwave field and the design scheme. This paper mainly studied the application of HIS in the SIW horn antenna about back lobe, cross coupling and RCS reduction.First of all, this paper analyzed the basic principle of HIS. The two significant feature, reflection phase and surface wave band-gap, was analyzed embarking from the equivalent model of high impedance surface.Secondly, put forward the Substrate Integrated Waveguide(SIW) E-step horn antenna, which has smaller volume and less reflection, and used it as the basic antenna unit in the following.1. Using HIS reduced the antenna unit back lobe. In view of the antenna unit back lobe is larger fault, analyzed the source of it which is mainly form of the second radiated wave from backward surface wave. And considering the surface wave suppression characteristic of HIS, loaded HIS on the surface of the antenna to restrain the surface wave, reduce the back lobe and increase the gain, and verified through the experiment.2. Using HIS reduced the cross coupling in array antenna. In view of the cross coupling causing Gain falling, lobe distortion and SWR increase in array antenna, the surface wave suppression characteristic of HIS was used for decreasing the cross coupling from the surface wave and improve the antenna performance, and verified through the experiment.3. Using HIS reduced the Radar Cross Section(RCS) in array antenna. In view of the high RCS in array antenna and hard to be decreased, the reflection phase feature of HIS was used for decreasing the RCS. The RCS decrease in array antenna based on SIW step horn antenna was researched though using HIS structure, and analyzed though simulations.
