Fiber lasers are taking optical fiber as substrates, doping certain rare earth ions as the working media, or using their own nonlinear effects to produce lasers. Fiber lasers play important roles in the field of laser research due to its characteristics (high conversion efficiency, easy heat dissipation, low threshold, good beam quality, etc.). Currently, laser devices in 2 μm band are being mature, thus the lasers in this band have become a hot topic in the mid-infrared laser research.2 μm thulium-doped fiber lasers belong to eye-safe band (> 1.4μm) and low-loss atmospheric window, having been widely used in the mechanical processing, medical science, scientific research, space optical communications, military and other fields. Some scratches or spot defects in the fiber end faces will greatly affect the coupling efficiency of the pump light. Consequently, in this paper, the shortage of the fiber cleaving with the mechanical cleaver was summed up based on its using experience, and a novel method for polishing fiber end face based on the support of thick-walled quartz glass tube was put forward, obtaining ideal fiber end faces. After fiber polishing, a 2 μm continuous-wave output laser experiment was also done with a thulium-doped polarization-maintaining fiber.
