With the continuous development of road traffic, automobiles have been an indispensable part of people’s life. At the same time, this also attracts security risks so that human beings pay more and more attentions on this. In recent years, traffic accidents happened frequently and people suffer a lot from it, in this case people began to think more seriously about products of traffic security. The drivers are easy to get tired or careless when driving a car, in this way may lead to lane departure accident so the Lane Departure Warning System(LDWS) has been put forward.This system is belonged to vehicle navigation system. The system captures images through a vehicle traveling data recorder which is installed in front of the windscreen. After capture the images, we use relevant photo processing technologies to realize the purpose of lane detection, lane recognition and finally make a judgment of whether automobile is on right way or not and make a response to the drivers. This thesis introduces the function and development of lane departure warning system, analyzes and compares different algorithms in this region, and finally presented a design flow of this system. By analyzing and simulating different algorithms of every various part in this system, finally give the optimizing method to realize this system.This system can be divided into three parts, lane detection, lane recognition and the judgment of lane departure. In first part, lane detection includes two parts: image preprocessing and feature extraction. In this part, we use gray image processing, mean filter, OTSU for binaryzation, histogram equalization, vertical edge detection and any other methods to get a clearer image of lane line. In lane recognition part, we divided region of interest into three parts, on the basis of Hough transform and B-spline snake realize the straight line recognition and curved line recognition. In the last part, the method on basis of lane angle is adopted to make a judgment of whether the automobile is on the right way or not, and finally achieve the basis function of lane departure warning system.
