The emergence of WiMAX not only meets the needs of wireless broadband access, but also a good solution to the "Last Mile" access problem. With the increasing number of mobile subscribers and myriad type of multimedia applications, the performance of WiMAX system is under challenge. How to design an appropriate handover method for higher-speed data transmission and higher-resources efficiency during the communication process has become an interesting subject.This thesis proposes a new handover method based on routing status. In the process of communication, the serving BS can help users to switch a target BS,in which users can construct a new path based on local routing, so the transmission efficiency can be greatly increased.Firstly, this thesis studies the IEEE 802.16 protocol, forum specifications. Then the reference model, network topology and specific functions of each component part are analyzed. Besides, this thesis introduces the local routing technology based on WiMAX,including the principle and optimization of communication system.Secondly, this thesis analyzes the shortcomings of the existing handover method and proposes a handover method based on routing status. The method gives the handover trigger decision algorithm and the specific design of BS selection algorithm. At last, the thesis verifies the algorithm performance by means of simulation.Lastly, this thesis introduces the network system platform of WiMAX. After adding the handover function, the handover process can be simulated. The functionality of existing platform is further improved.
