UMTS system, as one of the 3G standards, showed strong vitality beginning from the birth, and continued to UMTS Advanced and UMTS Beyond evolution.It has become the international mainstream of 3G standards. Compared to the 4G LTE system, its disadvantages are mainly the system bandwidth and the data rate.But in the voice business, its PAPR and system coverage are even better than the LTE system. In order to sustain the competitiveness of UMTS system evolution,3GPP-LTE International Standardization Organization for Migration, according to the discrete spectrum in 2G era, recently launched the S-UMTS research project. In the conditions of spectrum polymerization, the multiple access technology of the wireless communication system must be flexible to support the allocation of non-contiguous occupied spectrum, improve utilization of the spectrum and also maintain a good capability about anti-jamming. The use of filtered multitone modulation(FMT) to achieve narrowband aggregation transmission of 3GPP UMTS signals becomes one of the candidates. FMT system, based on the use of the non-overlap spectrum and adding some protective zones, can effectively overcome sensitive deviation issues about frequency which are brought by the reuse of frequency. Further, FMT system, as the OFDM system, can also use Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) to reduce the complexity of system implementation greatly.Based on the respective transmission characteristics of the UMTS system and FMT system, we propose a CDMA narrowband multi-carrier aggregation system which is based on filter bank. We call it CDMA-FMT system. It can combine the advantages of the UMTS system and FMT system together. It greatly enhances the spectrum utilization of the UMTS system, and represents an important direction development about future wireless broadband multicarrier system. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the system implementation complexity is not high, and its performance is between the traditional UMTS system and 4G LTE system. It is one of the 3G UMTS system evolution directions.
