Solid-state volumetric true 3D display is one kind of static imaging technologies, which presents both psychological field depth and physical field depth. The display unit consists of a stack of liquid crystal shutters, displaying an image via high-speed scanning. Based on visual staying phenomenon and apparent motion, the human being can perceive the 3D moving image. Solid-state volumetric true 3D display has the merit of no-need special glass, large size, high resolution, which is expected to become the future mainstream true 3D display.This thesis analyzes the pros and cons of the existing optical engines, based on the display principle. The 3DLP projection system is chosen to meet the needs of high-speed projecting and large-amount data transmission. The high-power color LEDs are used for adjusting the color temperature and supplying enough high luminance. The light pipe illumination system is considered to map the light source and reduce costs. The whole system structure is therefore confirmed. This thesis then made the detailed design of TIR prism, Philips prism and projection lens. In order to solve different imaging size on different LC shutters, Fresnel lens is proposed to collimate lights to improve the brightness uniformity and reduce the volume. According to the design, the optical simulation and structural design are made. The solid-state volumetric true 3D display engineering prototype is developed, verified, debugged and tested. Both the simulation results and practical test results show that the color-separation and color-recombination system can work properly, the projection lens imaging quality is excellent and the depth of field meets the requirement, the light path is reasonable and the imaging sizes on different LC shutters are almost same, the system is stability and the 3D effect is perfect.
