Motorcycle instrument is an indispensable part of the motorcycle, as an important channel to obtain motorcycle informati on in the process of driving, the completely of instrument function will directly affect the safety and correctness of driving. With the improvement of production automation, machine vision technology is gradually appl ied in motorcycle instrument checking, to overcome the faults of traditional artificial visual checking process, such as the limitation of human eye detection accuracy and low efficiency.By referring to the literature about machine vision production automation and machine vision applied to th e instrument checking, systematically analyze the software system and peripheral hardware devices of motorcycle instrument checking, including instrument control method and camera selection.The image processing algorithm is the focus of this article. First, the images camera captured must be preprocessed, including convert image from color to grayscale, threshold segmentation, Mathematical Morphology and find the outline, etc. These image preprocessing algorithms separate the target foreground from background, and improve the stability of the follow-up image processing. Then study the image processing algorithm and concrete implementation method about all functions of motorcycle instrument checking, including the pointer angle, LCD screen digital, LCD screen oil and the LED indicator light. The recognition of pointer points, segmentation and recognition of LCD screen digital and recognition of LED indicator light color is the key to processing algorithm of the motorcycle instrument checking based on image. Each checking content and requirements of the items is according to the actual needs of instrument manufacturers.The PC software system contains the image processing algorithm, controls the whole instrument checking system. All the state information, parameters and results during the instrument ch ecking are displayed intuitivism through the software system interface. The parameters and results during instrument checking are saved in the configuration file, and the structure of configuration file is reasonab le. It is convenient to control the instrument checking by modifying the checking demand using text editor.The motorcycle instrument checking method based on image in this article, has much innovation. Through a large number of repeated experiments, the method has been proved to meet the actual production needs, and has practical significance to improve the instrument checking automation.
