Modern GPU supports tens of thousands of parallel threads and delivers remarkably high computing throughput. It also has a significant advantage in area utilization,average power consumption,programming flexibility and cost control.However, GPGPUs are facing severe power challenge due to the increasing frequency and the number of cores placed on a single chip. Considering their manycore structure, low-power-consumption design is essential and complicated,for it requires study on multiple levels concurrently.So it’s a good start to study GPU power consumption with software simulator.This article first reviews the CUDA programming model and the relationship with GPGPU, as the programming language. Then introduces two GPU architecture simulator, performance simulator GPGPU-Sim, and power simulator GPUWattch. According to the analysis of GPU power consumption, I built the software simulation platform to simulate the power consumption of GPU, and analyze data. I extended the main modules of GPGPU-Sim with GPUWattch to realize a power simulator.
