Now the industrial robots have the characteristics of multi scale, multi species, small batch and complex. It would produce many drawbacks to adopt the tradition design method of “a kind of demand, a kind of design”. But comparing with the traditional industrial robots, the modular industrial robots can not only quickly build the robot the customer needs so as to improve their flexibility, but also solve many problems about the varieties, specifications, design cycle, and cost of them. Therefore, it is very significant to build modular industrial robots combining the modular thought, information coding, and PDM management according to different needs.In this paper, on the basis of the principle of module division, aiming at a kind of traditional industrial robots, five kinds of basic modules--- base module, auxiliary module, driver module, execution module, and control module are built according to the different function. The structures and parameters of those modules are designed. Such the module partition system of industrial robot is established.The paper proposes an encoding method suitable for the industrial robot on the basis of the coding theory, designs the codes of above five modules, establish the characteristics database of these modules, and solves the encoding problems of module parameters effectively.The paper analyses the PDM system; chooses, installs, debugs, and tests Solidworks PDM Works plugins in order to manage, import, and export the data of the modules; conducts the effective management and application of the modules.Finally, the paper completes the design of the whole process from module partition, and encoding to importing, exporting, and retrieving PDM system with the following examples: series of six degrees of freedom of industrial robots that YASKAWA company produces.
