In this paper, the steel ball automatic sorting system based on steel ball surface characteristics is designed. The surface characteristics of the steel ball is the research object in this paper. In order to detect the defects of the steel ball surface accurately and to sort the steel balls effectively, the edge detection algorithm is researched more deeply. The fuzzy edge detection algorithm based on gamma correction is proposed in this paper. The advantages of the edge detection algorithm improved and the accuracy of the steel ball sorting system is verified by experiment. The main research work is as follows.(1)Hardware structure of the steel ball sorting system. The selection and requirements of device CCD camera, lighting, material conveying device, motor oil pump and so on.(2)The acquisition and processing of the steel ball surface image. Filter the image noise and simplify the computation by the image segment, image filtering and the image binarization to the steel ball surface image collected by the CCD camera.(3)The advantage of the edge detection algorithm on the gray image and steel ball surface image proposed in this paper. Analysis of the shortcomings of the traditional edge detection algorithm in extracting the defect edge of the steel ball.The fuzzy edge detection algorithm based on the gamma correction is preserved in this paper. Make experiment on detecting the gray image and the steel ball surface image edge. The result showed that, the algorithm in this paper detect the edge more accurate and faster than the traditional edge detection algorithm.(4)The accuracy of the steel ball sorting system. 30 steel ball of diameter is?19.050 and 60 steel ball of diameter is ?15.000 were sorted by the steel ball sorting system in this paper. The result showed that, the steel ball sorting accuracy is almost the same to the sorting result by the steel ball manufacturer.
