In modern science and technology, especially in integrated circuits, embedded computing and the rapid development of low power micro sensor technology, people can build a large-scale and low-cost wireless sensor network through a large number of low-cost micro sensors. With the three functions of computing, communication and sensing in one, Wireless Sensor Network (Wireless Sensor Network, WSN) has become a hot research spot. Wireless sensor network in the ad-hoc network characteristics, greatly extends the ability to obtain information, and combines different objects of the physical world with virtual world together through the network connection, and enables the human to explore the areas that is not inappropriate for human activities or the human cannot reach, and provides people with the most direct, the most effective, the most real, and the most useful information.Wireless sensor network (WSN) is based on the Ad-hoc network, and realizes the perception, monitoring on the target area or a particular object, and transmits the information to the remote end of the nodes through the network. In real scenarios, there are many occasions or areas that the human is unable or unfit for human activities, in order to achieve monitoring of such occasions or areas, the data must be in the form of wireless transmission, and nodes must be deployed to achieve the data transmission channel. In some large-scale applications, such as forest, debris flow disaster monitoring, environmental monitoring, etc., need a massive deployment of sensor nodes, which needs wireless sensor network.In wireless sensor network, the location information is a significant element. Remote end obtains data that sensor nodes percept, and understands message the data carry. In data, location information of data is very important. Data without having location information cannot reflect activities and changes of the monitoring region or a specific goal, and the data itself has lost its practical value. In the many applications of wireless sensor network, such as the battlefield monitoring, precision agriculture, remote medical treatment and intelligent traffic, etc., other nodes and the remote end all need precise location information. Because the self-organizing characteristics of wireless sensor network, wireless sensor nodes in network need to be located.This paper deals with the positioning technology of wireless sensor network (WSN) research. The research status of wireless sensor network, the main research direction and subject, and the architecture of wireless sensor networks have been introduced in this paper, and the localization algorithms are introduced in detail. At the same time, the analysis of the mathematical theories supporting localization algorithms is made, and the localization algorithm classification is introduced. The ranging-free localization algorithms of centroid algorithm, APIT localization algorithm and DV-Hop localization algorithm are introduced in detail. Based on the analysis of defects in DV-Hop localization algorithm, two improved thoughts are proposed:compensation and correction, four improved algorithms are put forwarded based on two kinds of improved thoughts. In order to verify the validity and reliability of the improved algorithms, all are simulated through the experiment, and experiment results are analyzed and illustrated combined with the concrete algorithm thoughts. Later, the characteristics of the applications of wireless sensor network are analyzed, and the practicability of improved algorithms is expounded in this paper. Finally, the whole research work is summarized, and work for the future is discussed.
