The development of 3D game in the last decade can be described in full swing, the economic value created in game every year is also very large. In order to pursue a greater sense of immersion, interactivity and realism which the game gives people, now the game content has become increasingly complicated. Since the Chinese women scholars Tu Xiaoyuan created the artificial fish which was later called "Xiaoyuan’s fish" by academics, the academic community had launched a series of valuable scientific researchin on artificial intelligence, artificial life and artificial psychology and many other disciplines based on Xiaoyuan’s vivid and lifelike artificial fish, but there are few attempt to applicate artifical fish in game’s development and research. The reason is that the movement of fish simulation requires solving complex equations of motion which is extremely time-consuming. So how to solve the time-consuming problem of of artificial fish and how to put artificial fish in games are full of challenges and urgent matter.Through learning and research of 3D game’s development and design as well as fish-related knowledge, and combined with real fish’s movement and habitat characteristics, how to designe and use artificial fish in 3D game is discussed in this paper.3D model for the fish role is established through fish height and thickness profile modeling method based on NURBS curves in this paper. Meanwhile fish swimming equation is studied and a fast and real-time movement of fish in the line of theoretical model through MATLAB simulation is established, and it is a very critical step to put the artificial fish movement into the game. For the fin movement, traditional rigid fins is studied and the equations of motion of the rigid fin is improved so that fin’s movement looks more natural.For the simulation of the behavior of the fish, a behavioral repertoire which includes role fish’s seeking behavior, arrirving behavior, fleeing behavior, pursuiting behavior, avoiding obstacle’s behavior, wandering behavior, happy and sad behavior is designed. In order to make the role fish percept the information of environmental around, the sendor of fish is designed. Meanwhile, in order to make a more realistic simulation of fish’s habitat, the underwater scenes which included simulation of plants, simulation of water bubble, simulation of soft body is designed and realized. The conventional 3D model’s loading and rendering resolution, management function of cenes and entities are also realized.The research background and significance of 3D games and the status quo at home and abroad related to artificial fish is introduced in this paper; then geometric modeling of 3D fish, motion simulation of 3D fish, the behavior database of 3D fish, sensory function design of 3D fish, management and implementation of underwater scenes and the design of 3D games on artificial fish are discussed; and finally a summary and outlook of all the research and work and, a analysis of some current existing problems and the fulture work to be done are made.
