Wireless sensor network (short for WSN) had obtained more and more attention and application because of its ability to sense and transmit data within the monitoring area. By selecting the appropriate neighbor nodes for each node, topology control effectively reduced the energy consumption of network communication and prolonged the survival time of the network. At the same time it had a significant impact of network throughput, transmission reliability, coverage quality, signal interference and transmission delay. So topology control was the core support technology of WSN.Firstly this paper detailedly introduced topology control of WSN from power control, hierarchical topology and sleep scheduling. In the view of current topology control algorithms based on theoretical scene, a distributed adaptive topology control algorithm based on feedback information(FDATC) was put forward. The algorithm did not need too much hypothesis for sensor nodes or network model. FDATC was composed of three phases:In the topology formation phase, link quality and communication cost were considered comprehensively to establish optimized network topology which achieved symmetry, connectivity and energy efficiency. In the topology maintenance phase, FDATC employed a feedback mechanism to dynamically maintain individual link quality; In the topology rebuilt phase, when the network topology changed, base station started the reconstruction mechanism to restore the network topology. In the experiment portion, firstly MatLab and OMNet++were utilized to prove FDATC’s advantage of the average node degree, the minimum hops to the base station and the transmission power of node. Then the wild forest experiments results demonstrated that FDATC could reach a better balance between improving reliability of data transmission and saving network energy.
