Along with the development of the computer technology, automatic control system with integrated network has been applied in varied industry control area. The traditional control system is replaced by the new field control system which based on embedded systems and devices. The CANopen communication a new BUS communication technology based on CAN BUS has been used much in foreign countries and is being used more. CANopen is one of these protocols and has already seen wide adoption within industry and other sectors such as building automation and public transport. But the application of CANopen internal China is late, and few company is developing, core technology and tools are controlled by foreigners. This add much difficulties in application of CANopen in China.The key device of the CANopen communication is CANopen master. The power of CANopen communication is determined by the functionality of CANopen master because of is function of network management and communication control for the whole network.The Controller Area Network or CAN provides the user with many powerful features including multimaster functionality and the ability to broadcast/multicast telegrams. The low cost of CAN components, high data reliability and short reaction times together with its huge user base will ensure future of CAN is safe for an extremely long time to come.The principle and application of CANopen network and communication is firstly introduced in this paper. The construction of CAN bus network based on CANopen protocol, the workflow of CANopen master, the analyse of design and realization have also been conducted. CANopen network master which based on CANopen standard CiA DSP-301,CiA DSP-302 and CiA DSP-305 has been realized in both software and hardware .In this paper the CANopen master is an CANopen common function added by NMT master. This master is not the full function master which referred by CiA 302 and other CiA protocols.The author has experience in CANopen devices application and CANopen I/O device development. Has knowledge in CAN and CANopen communication.
