CCITT published the first video coding standard in the year of1984. Since then, peoplewas working hard on it. And then the latest video coding standard–H.264/AVC waspublished. H.264/AVC has advantage in data compression. Comparing to the formerstandard, such as MPEG-2, it has higher rate of data compression in the same quality ofvideo. At the same time, H.264/AVC has better ability in fault tolerance, it uses differentmethods in both the phase of coding and transmitting. Erasure coding has became a widelyused technology in distributed system.By coding the distributed data, erasure codingproduces several redundant data. When some data lost in distributed system, system willdecode the redundant data and the survived data to recover the lost data. Nowadaysmultimedia data is widespread in Internet and also distributed environment, the reliability ofmultimedia data is becoming more and more significant. This paper introduces erasurecoding to the video coding framework by presenting a collaborative framework of erasurecoding and video coding. We apply Reed Solomon code as the erasure code, and H.264video coding framework.By finding the coding details in common and combining two codingschemes together, it can achieve high quality of reliability of multimedia data. We use PSNR(Peak Signal to Noisy Ratio) to measure the quality of the picture and standard data set to testthe collaborative framework of EC and VC. This collaborative framework provides a newidea of the combination between EC and VC, at the same time, it provides higher reliabilityof the data.(using the result of testing) The conclusion shows that the framework shorten theerasure coding delay, at the same time, it ensures the original video coding performance. The framework also improves the quality of video data and makes the combination easier.
