This paper is mainly studied the propagation characteristic of mirror symmetrical photoniccrystal heterostructures in the THz range using the simulation software MATLAB, which basedon the theory of the photonic crystals. At the same time, a microstrip antenna based on photoniccrystal is designed, which uses the photonic bandgap properties of the photonic crystals. Thecenter frequency of the microstrip antenna is0.2THz. The photonic crystal microstrip antennais designed and analyzed by the software of HFSS and Origin. The main contents of this paper:(1) The paper introduces the basic theory of the photonic crystal and the microstrip antenna,respectively. It includes the concept of the photonic crystal, the structure of the photonic crystals,the calculation method of the photonic crystals and the application of photonic crystals. Thepaper describes the concept of the microstrip antenna, the radiation mechanism of the microstripantenna, the performance parameters of the antenna and several typical microwave photoniccrystal antennas.(2) Propagation characteristic of mirror symmetrical photonic crystal heterostructures wasstudied by transfer matrix method in the range of0.1THz~0.9THz. The paper discusses that theperiodic numbers, the layer thickness and the incoming angle have an effect on the photoniccrystal in the range of0.1THz~0.9THz, respectively. The periodic numbers have a little effecton the photonic band gap. The number of photonic band gap and the width of photonic bandgap increase with the total thickness increasing. With the incoming angle increasing, photonicband gap moves toward the high-frequency direction. The research provides a theoretic basisfor the development of THz devices.(3) The photonic crystals with insertion of defect are applied to the microstrip antenna.The photonic crystal microstrip antenna is designed at0.2THz frequency by the software HFSS. With the compared of the normal microstrip antenna, the gain of the photonic crystal microstripantenna is increased. The different cycles of photonic crystal have an effect on the proposedmicrostrip antenna. As well as, the different distances between the photonic and the microstripantenna influence on the gain and the S11of the proposed antenna. The design of the photoniccrystal microstrip works in the THz spectrum frequency band, which provides the certainreference meaning in the THz communication.
