Along with the rapid development of cable technology in recent years, television has increasingly become the primary method by which people use to access information, communicate with each other and do for entertainment. In order to meet people’s needs, Multiple Service Operators are also active in the launch of new services such as Video On Demand services, Switch Digital Video services, High speed Internet services to attract more TV subscribers.However, in today’s China, there is no uniform industry standards, operators generally uses a single service system architecture. Diversified services require multiple sets of architecture to provide these services. Combined with the increase of the scale of operation and the grow of the number of users, that makes the head-end of a sharp increase in demand for various services, and will inevitably lead to waste of resources in the edge devices.Standardization Alliance CableLabs recently introduced Converged Cable Access Platform. It supports most of the current existing system architectures, such as NGOD architecture, DOCSIS standard, HFC system architecture, etc.. CCAP can provide a unified video and data transmission services, which will meet more service operators’demand for high density of edge QAM and CMTS.Based on this new device architecture, I propose and implement a comprehensive edge resource management program, which is designed to dynamically and flexibly manage frequency and bandwidth resources in this kind of Head-end equipment, and to provide a reasonable allocation of resources for sessions’establishment that session manager requests. ERM can achieve efficient use of resources.Firstly, there is a brief introduction of CCAP. This paper explained the advantages of this new equipment, the infrastructures it supports and the services it can provide.Secondly, this paper has analyzed the requirement of the subject, and defined the required functions. Through comparison between two architecture, NGOD and DOCSIS, which traditional ERM belong in, we analyzed the interactive interface that Unified Edge Resource Manager need to accomplishment.Then, on the basis of the requirement analysis, according to different functions, this paper has divided the modules of the software system. It also describe the detailed of the internal implementation of each module and the allocation processes of VOD, SDV and HSI.In the final of article, we carried out experiments and tests for ERM to verify whether it can properly and reasonably allocate edge resources for each kind of session request.
