Recent years,in the field of optical communications,semiconductor laser plays animportant role in the terms of the light source and its performance has also been rapidly.With the deepening application development of WDM-wavelength division multiplexingoptical transmission system, the higher requirement of indicators for the light source laserhave been put forward.The external cavity laser with mixture integrated miniaturizationhas severalfeatures, such as a simple technology to achieve, high quality signal and a widetuning range, gets more and more attention for research institutes and scholars. Externalcavity tunable laser with the long external cavity and the external mode selection devicemakes it differ from conventional laser on the process package and modulation.This paper made a detailed introduction of several different application of existingexternal cavity laser, and discussed each tuning mechanism and its characteristics. Acomprehensive exposition of basic theory that covered the semiconductor laser andexternal cavity tunable laser been made, then introduced and analyzed the basic features ofexternal cavity laser. The article not only researched the coupling principle and opticalstructure of the active chip and the passive waveguide in present stage, but also designed asilicon optical lens. Then simulation analyzed and actually tested the coupling performanceof this optical lens. Finally, the study analyzed direct modulation characteristics of thedirect modulation external cavity tunable laser. Through theoretical derivation andsimulation analysis, considered the factors of direct modulation external cavity tunablelaser include optical domain delay and electric domain delay. On this basis, we developed atunable external cavity laser, built the experimental test platform, tested and analyzed theeffect of impact factor on direct modulation. Overall, this study have a certain referencevalue on the package design and direct modulation applied research of external cavitytunable laser.
