With the development, maturity and popularity of computer network, the full application of Internet in every aspect of daily life, people enjoy the convenience that ubiquitous network has brought in everyday life and industry. In the meantime, with the continuous integration of automatic control technology, computer technology and digital communications technology, Ethernet gradually reaches the standard of industrial control network, which requires low latency, high interoperability, high reliability, high interference ability and high security features. As a result, people are eager to monitor and control manufacturing process through Ethernet, to form a control and information integrated distribution network. Networked control system meets this need precisely. In this paper, a device monitoring system framework based on Ethernet and programmable logic controllers (PLC) was proposed, in order to achieve large-scale device monitoring and control.Various types of industrial control technology were studied in this paper, such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, DCS (Distributed Control System) system, PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and fieldbus technology. Conclusions were drawn, about what are the basic components of an industrial control system, and how they should be connected with each other. Moreover, in order to achieve large-scale device monitoring, high concurrency technology was studied; concurrent processing capability of different solutions was tested. Finally, a software framework for large scale device monitoring system was proposed, which is based on event-driven programming, with its graphic interface separated from its control logic. By abstracting the common characteristics of industrial control systems, the framework adapts various device monitoring scenarios (such as process monitoring diagnostic instrumentation, building and home automation control, intelligent control, etc.); By adopting the event-driven programming model, the framework handles concurrent IO request more efficiently; By separating graphic interface from control logic, the framework accommodates system expansion more easily.
