With the rapid development of mobile communication technology, the requirement for data transmission rates and reliability of communication system is higher, the contradiction between limited communication resource and the increasing communication service demand has become a key problem urgently to be solved in the next generation of mobile communication. By erecting multiple transceiver antennas multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology significantly improves data transmission rate and still guarantees the effectiveness of system transmission, however, the performance of the system is limited by the inter-channel interference (ICI), inter-antenna synchronization (IAS) and high-complexity receiver detection algorithm. Spatial Modulation (SM) has been recently proposed as a new modulation technique for MIMO systems, which the transmitted information is divided into two parts, respectively mapped to a space antenna constellation diagram and a signal constellation diagram, the proposed modulation concept solves the problem of traditional MIMO modulation techniques, which can achieve better spectral efficiency without increasing the system bandwidth and transmission power.According to the concept of spatial modulation, this paper has an intense study in the system performance of SM in MIMO environment. Based on spatial modulation technology research background and development situation at home and abroad, this paper firstly introduces the principle and system model of spatial modulation, a flat Rayleigh fading channel is assumed to analysis the different SM demodulation algorithm, also space shift keying (SSK) and generalized space shift keying (GSSK) modulation techniques are studied to compare with the performance of SM. Secondly, the theory error performance of SM is analyzed and several theoretical analysis methods of SSK and SM are discussed. By gradually optimize the BER performance analysis models of SM, the BER theoretical bound of SM is eventually obtained in any MIMO scheme and confirms its accuracy by simulation. In order to further study the performance characteristics of SM, this paper presents a non-Gaussian SM noise channel model. Under the environment of abrupt pulse noise, system BER performance is analyzed by changing the parameters of mixture noise model, simulation results show that SM has strong anti-interference capability. In addition, this paper also studies the performance of SM in visible light communication (VLC) system. Based on the indoor line-of-sight (LOS) transmission channel, the optical channel characteristics of visible light communication (VLC) is considered in indoor MIMO environments. And in the LOS transmission system optical spatial modulation system is realized by changing the position parameters of the LED transmitters and receivers, further analyses the performance benefits of SM technique in VLC system.
