The traditional microwave transmission technology has encountered some technical bottlenecks with the increasing demands for wireless communication capacity and transfer rates, such as the high transmission loss and the poor electromagnetic compatibility. Fortunately, the emergence of microwave photonics provides an effective solution for these problems. As a typical product of interdisciplinary, microwave photonics has been widely used in the next generation broadband wireless access networks, radar, satellite communications systems, sensor networks, electronic warfare systems, etc. And microwave photonic frequency mixing, one of the most important technologies of microwave photonics, has been widely used in information technology field. In this paper, the meaning of microwave photonics in modern communication is analyzed and presented in detail starting from the microwave photonic frequency mixing. Combining RoF technology’s basic theory, we fully optimize the microwave photonic frequency mixing system and extend it to the field of microwave photonics multiple frequencies mixing. The main works of this paper are as follows.Firstly, the technical background and technical characteristics of microwave photonics frequencies mixing technology is well introduced, as well as the good prospects. Secondly, some technical evaluation indicators, such as system gain, carrier-to-noise ratio degradation (less than1dB), error vector magnitude (less than17.5%rms), and spurious response rejection ratio (greater than50dB) are adopted. Thirdly, a microwave photonic frequency mixing system based on cascade modulation is prepared, and after a series of optimizations, its performance is effectively improved. Finally, the above mentioned system is extended to a multiple frequencies mixing application by combining the frequency mixing scheme with WDM technology and a series of experimental tests are carried out. Results show that the system designed in this paper has good communication performance, which indicates that the work done in this paper provides a low-cost and high-stability solution for future communication services.
