With the rapid development of wireless communications, the users and traffic under the amount of communication networks show the trend of explosive growth. To reduce the energy consumption and the environmental pollution caused by emissions, green communication techniques are essentially studied. The majority portion of telecommunication system energy has been comsumpt by the base station side, so energy-saving solution for the base station has also been extensive researched and designed.This thesis proposes a different kind of method to realize the energy saving in base stations. And three base station modes are defined:Normal Work Mode, Light Sleep Mode and Deep Sleep Mode. By conditionally switching among these modes according to the traffic load, base stations will fall asleep when it’s necessary to save energy. This thesis also proposes a novel way to evaluate the traffic load of the network. State set is brough in to analyze the process of state transition.Moreover, a general method of optimizing all bases’modes is put forward and the energy-efficiency is considered in the optimizing process. The QoS of the network is also evaluated. Because many base stations combined sleeping and wake-up optimization problem is a NP problem, heuristic algorithms and greedy algorithm are adopted to solve this in order to get all bases status.Finally, the simulation progress is given, and LTE scenario is adopted to assess sleep and wake-up mechanism performance while the propery of the whole network is also be evaluated. And simulation performance is good.
