People have begun to study video communication technology since the1960s. However, technologies were not mature at that time and the market demand was not strong. As a result, the application related to video com-munication didn’t become popular. Relying on the development of computer technology and mobile Internet, Multimedia information such as audio, video, picture and text makes more and more people begin to enjoy the convenience of communication over the network. A variety of instant messaging tools have become an indispensable part of daily communication. In recent years, online communication is no longer limited to the text. More extensive and flexible form is needed such as audio and video. The real-time video communication is gradually put on the agenda of research and application. With the enhanced ca-pabilities of mobile hardware and the popularity of3G/4G networks, real-time video communication between mobile terminals becomes feasible whether in technology or in market. More and more enterprises begin to pay attention to this area.However, developers have to deal with a variety of complex issues. Indi-vidual developers and small companies do not have the technical accumulation about video communication and financial support, which hinders the develop-ment of such applications until html5WebRTC appears. WebRTC contains most core technology of video communication. Developers could easily imple-ment real-time multimedia applications between browsers via html5and simple javascript apis without requiring plugins. WebRTC offers many functions such as video capture, encoder/decoder and network transport. What’s more, We-bRTC is a html5standard, which means it is cross-platform, that is to say, write once, run anywhere. To some extent, WebRTC saves the cost of development and maintenance.Based on the above background, this paper explores WebRTC audio en-gine, video engine and the network transport. A real-time video communica-tion system is designed using WebRTC, which achieves the target of one-to-one and one-to-many video communication between mobile and pc browsers. At last we have the system tested. The system works well, with high voice call quality and smooth video screen. All the work proposed in the paper should be reference to related study.
